Hello everybody out there using minix -

I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).

I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)


PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

Cosa vuol dire tutto questo? é il famoso post che Linus Torvalds mandò nel lontano 1991 segnalando al NG di minix di aver iniziato a scrivere il codice di un sistema operativo FREE, che prese poi il nome di LINUX...nel "mondo degli informatici" è un testo storico, molto buffo da leggere a posteriori! Io non sono un fanatico di Linux, e non ce l'ho con gli altri sistemi operativi come molti nerds ciccioni fanno (purtoppo a NY non ho trovato il musical "Nerds", con le parodie di Bill Gates e Steve Jobs, CEO di Apple...ci avrebbero spennati però ho sentito che fa veramente ridere!)...a me piacciono le cose che facciano bene quello che chiedo loro, non mi interessa che facciano tutto alla perfezione, solo quello di cui ho bisogno in quel momento...Vi risparmio i discorsoni sulla filosofia dietro Linux e più in generale dietro all'open source, però vi segnalo un articoletto semplice semplice se voleste capirci qualcosa in più, qui.
Tutto questo in realtà per pubblicizzare anche qui l'iniziativa del Linux Day patrocinata da molti comuni italiani, il 26/11/2005 (programma).
